If there’s a rulebook on how to create an idyllic and romantic Ibizan boutique hotel honeymoon experience, Wersha Bharadwa says Hostal La Torre is absolutely it.
Location
Perched on a rugged hill and tucked away on a narrow residential corner behind an intricate labyrinth of roads in Cap Negret and just north of San Antonio, Hostal La Torre is boutique hotel built directly out of the foundation of its renowned cliff top restaurant and its panoramic views over the glistening Med and cinematic crimson sunsets.
A bonafide haven for foodies looking for a grown-up sleepover, exploring Ibizan’s historical charm and the delights of the UNESCO heritage Old Town and the famous San Jordi flea market is easy and only a 20-minute drive away. Nearer still are the wonderful clear water coves of Cala Gracio and Punta Galera, both a 10-minute walk from the hotel.
First Impressions
La Torre started off as an old Spanish hostel and now, surrounded by an abundance of lush vegetation and under the design and style eye of the well-known Mambo group, recaptures the essence of the island’s old bohemian spirit as a thriving, chi-chi boutique retreat for couples.
If you’re looking for a short haul honeymoon with a classic, laid-back Balearic vibe, you’d be hard pressed to find a dreamier setting. And as an Ibizan stalwart, the hotel evokes everything that’s magical about the Island; the lazy days in the sunshine, Balearic beats and live music from the best bands and DJs, unworldly surroundings and spectacular sunsets with pillows strewn across bronzed rocks for you to sit on and gaze out onto small fishing boats making their way out into the opulent deep blue sea from.
It all speaks of romance and is a shed load of fun too, especially when the weekend crowd descend for sun-kissed lunches.
On entering, you’re met by a gorgeous, flower-filled courtyard garden complete with cosy seating underneath fringed trees offering plenty of shade. Reception is on the first floor, but don’t worry, concierge whisk luggage straight into rooms so there’s no hassle of having to heave anything upstairs except for the cold glass of cava they’ll already have handed you on arrival.
You’ll embrace the friendly intuitive staff on reception, especially Pierre, Hector and Lori who’ll happily organise for magazines and books from the in-house library to be sent to your room alongside freshly shaken cocktails. Housekeeping staff are utterly charming too and offer breezy service and the sunniest greetings every morning.
And sure, you can dip in and out of the night life – you’re not far from the lively super-clubs of Ushuaïa and Hï Ibiza near Playa d’en Bossa – but here, sipping cocktails and listening to the gentle soul-stirring soundtracks of the hotel, feels a million miles from it all.
Rooms at Hostal La Torre
The 17 airy and chic rooms are your chance to indulge in your cutest boutique hotel by the sea dreams with most offering either sea or rolling hillside views across the Dalt Vila and ample space to flop onto sofas and beds after a hard day sun-tanning and soaking up what the island has to offer. Rooms are spread across the courtyard and across the road in an outbuilding.
Ground floor suites are reached via cobbled paths and have lots of parking at the front with small alfresco seating areas shrouded with bougainvillea and other fauna. You’ll see rustic olive trees and the azure waters of the Med in the distance too. Walls are excellently soundproofed and painted in classic Ibizan white, while immaculate and contemporary wood accents and furniture give everything in suites a photogenic finish (including windows draped with muslin).
Newly refurbished bathrooms are compact and designed with clever lighting, rustic-looking tiled walls and powerful overhead monsoon showers.
Along with all the top-notch trimmings (read here flatscreen Smart TVs and Nespresso machines), ground floor suites come with an added layer of privacy in the form of ultra cute, shaded terraces with views of the old town or across the sea to boost the romance factor. They’re perfect for secret stargazing at night, inhaling air scented with wild citrus blossom and listening to tiny birds singing away in the distance.
Best of all? We’re made to feel like big spoilt kids with a complimentary full mini bar (yes, you read that correctly) inclusive of all room rates. It’s packed to the rim with high end premium soft and alcoholic drinks, and tasty chocolates for when you’re peckish. Perfect for rounding off romantic dinners, you’ll adore sneaky late-night nightcaps on your terrace with the stars twinkling brightly in the skies overhead.
Food at Hostal La Torre
Not only the beating heart of the hotel, La Torres restaurant is a major gastronomic destination in the Ibizan foodie scene and one of the most- electrifying atmospheres you’ll find yourselves in on any night of the week. The perfect sunset views over miles of Ibiza’s coast are unrivalled on the Island and as are as big of a pull as the food.
Dinner here is bucket list Ibiza and so sought after that in high season, there’s a minimum spend to guarantee you a window seat for that theatrical show of when the blazing orange sun casts a colourful spectrum of amber shades as it melts its way into the sea. You’ll have to reserve a table well in advance too; tables are always booked with everyone striving for spot to soak in the rays on the terrace.
And DJ’s armed with eclectic soundtracks clamour for a spot at the decks just to get the gig at when the sun makes its dip into the horizon; it’s a moment when everyone claps and then goes back to devouring every forkful of food.
Speaking of which, the menu is simply knock-out. Made up of Spanish, Italian and French influences, the joyful plates include mushroom and blue cheese croquettes, Iberian ham, and tuna tartar with squid ink crisp.
All are perfect for rosé-fuelled dining under the open skies. Dreamy desserts include chocolate mousse with crumble, traditional vanilla flans, and homemade passion fruit, raspberry and mango sorbets.
With all the fun to be had over dinner, you’ll likely be the last to leave the restaurant. And lucky for you, your bedroom is only a short toddle away. You’ll drift off into deep unbroken sleeps inside the crisp, snow white sheets of gorgeous and gigantic beds in no time.
Breakfast is an indulgent and whimsical affair; you’ll sit on tables overlooking the Mediterranean and gorge on homemade granolas and yogurts and fluffy omelettes stuffed with juicy tomatoes as big as apples and served with salted padron peppers.
