Today we’re breaking down the sweetest part of the wedding planning process — aka, our favorite wedding cake designs and ideas! Whether you prefer traditional wedding cakes or unique retro cake styles, we’ve rounded up the most beautiful inspiration for every sweet tooth. We’ve even picked out a few adorable designs for your elopement or micro-wedding!
But before we get into the sugary masterpieces, here’s a quick history lesson: wedding cakes date back to ancient Rome, where the groom concluded the ceremony by breaking a loaf of barley bread over the bride’s head, symbolizing fertility. Nowadays, our traditions look a little different! Modern couples enjoy their post-ceremony treats wrapped in buttercream, flowers, fruits, painted designs, and so much more — and we’ve curated over 60 beautiful wedding cake ideas down below!
Plus, we’ve also teamed up with cake pro Jaime Melfi from Autumn Nomad to answer some of your burning questions. We created a full wedding cake guide at the bottom of this article, and you’ll also see her amazing advice and ideas sprinkled throughout the entire round-up. Let’s dig in!

Bride’s Cake and Groom’s Cake – What are they, and do you need both?
As you’re narrowing down your favorite designs and ideas for your wedding cake, you may stumble upon a little tradition called a groom’s cake. This is essentially an additional mini cake that’s designed to showcase the groom’s (or the second partner’s) personal taste and style — separate from the main cake, or what has traditionally been referred to as the “bride’s” cake.
While including both cakes in your celebration is a tradition that dates back to the late 19th century, it’s definitely not a requirement for modern day celebrations. It first became popular during a time when the bride chose almost everything for the wedding, and this second cake was a way for grooms to incorporate a little bit of their personality into the celebration.
But these days, more couples are planning the details of their big day together, and having separate cakes can feel a bit outdated. After all, you want both partner’s tastes to be reflected in the whole day, not just the cakes — amiright?!
That said, some couples still like to include a groom’s cake as a fun or unique touch to their dessert table. Ultimately, whether you have one cake or two cakes (or dozens of mini cakes!) is completely up to you, so do whatever feels right for your individual love story.
What are the most popular (and widely loved) wedding cake flavors?
While beautiful cake designs are a must, it’s the flavors that’ll really win over your guests! When it comes to the best crowd-pleasing wedding cake flavors, you can’t go wrong with classic ideas like vanilla, lemon, and chocolate. They’re popular for a reason — most people love them, and they’ll always be timeless!
Not a fan of classic flavors? No prob! For couples who want to switch things up and show off their unique taste with their wedding cake, we’re also big fans of unique flavor ideas that will have guests scrambling for a second slice. Which brings us to our next FAQ…
What unique wedding cake flavors will we see trending in 2024?
If you love unique wedding cake ideas, then you’re in luck — unexpected flavors and untraditional designs are going to be a major trend in 2024! In addition to the classics, we’re seeing more and more couples choose unique flavors like lavender, chai, matcha, citrus, and more (especially for smaller affairs with less tastes to cater to).
To help you come up with crowd-pleasing wedding cake flavor ideas that go beyond vanilla and chocolate, we asked Jaime Melfi from Autumn Nomad about her couple’s favorite ideas. Here’s what she told us:
- London Fog: This unique cake is soaked with Earl Grey and honey simple syrup and filled with creamy vanilla bean mascarpone cheese. YUM.
- Chocolate Blackberry Espresso: For a twist on classic chocolate, this cake is soaked in espresso ganache and filled with blackberry sauce and espresso buttercream.
- Chocolate Salted Caramel: Another one of the most drool-worthy chocolate wedding cake ideas, this one is soaked with homemade espresso ganache and homemade salted caramel, then filled with caramel buttercream.
- Lemon & Wild Maine Blueberry: Lemon is one of the most fool-proof flavor ideas for wedding cakes, and this one is layered with blueberry filling and lemon buttercream for a unique touch.
- Champagne Raspberry: A champagne cake? Say less! This celebratory cake is filled with raspberry sauce and champagne buttercream for a flavor your guests will never forget.
Our mouths are watering! We’re obsessed with how unique these wedding cake flavor ideas are, and we’re expecting to see even more adventurous ideas in 2024. After all, there’s nothing better than a cake that shows off your personal tastes or reflects your unique love story!
And this also applies to design ideas for wedding cakes…

GWS Pro Tip: If you love floral wedding cake ideas, it’s important to talk to your cake baker about their design process. As Jaime says, “In my experience, it’s best when the cake decorator puts flowers on the cake. As a cake artist, that is part of the overall cake design and one of my favorite aspects of the cake. However, there are some bakers that are more considered ‘bakers’ than ‘cake artists’ that do not put flowers on cakes.” So be sure to consult with your baker and your florist so you know who will add flowers to the cake — well in advance of the big day!

From the Experts – Everything You Need to Know About Getting Your Wedding Cake
Now that you’ve screenshotted, bookmarked, and gushed over your favorite wedding cake ideas, it’s time to answer a few essential questions to help you choose your perfect dessert. For this complete guide, we’ve teamed up with cake professional Jaime Melfi from Autumn Nomad. She’s sharing her best tips, tricks, and insider knowledge — so let’s get into it!
How much should you spend on a wedding cake?
How much you spend on your wedding cake will depend on the cake’s design, size, flavors, and price averages for your wedding location, so you’ll need to keep all these factors in mind when creating your budget. Here’s Jaime’s expert ideas for determining how much to spend on your dream wedding cake:
“When assessing our wedding clients from this past year, on average, the majority spent $1500-$2000 for a wedding of 100-200 people,” she says. “I think that’s a good range to budget for. That way, you have a pretty cake to cut, desserts to offer your guests, and delivery and set-up included.”
Looking for more budget-friendly wedding cake ideas? Jaime suggests keeping it simple. “We get a lot of DIY and rustic barn weddings, so we do simple, minimal cakes in the $500 range,” she told us. “Sometimes we have couples who will choose a much smaller cake, such as a two-tier cake with a buttercream design, which starts around $125 and has about 24 servings. The couple may then choose other desserts or ‘kitchen cakes’ just for slicing, which will also bring them to the $500 range.”
On the other hand, if you love more luxurious wedding cake ideas, then you should expect to spend anywhere from $2000 to $5000. “The most expensive cake we’ve produced was $10,000. But that total included flowers, set up, delivery, and a cake stand rental,” she says.
Flavors also make a big impact on your cake budget. As Jaime says, “Our specialty flavors have homemade fillings and unique flavor combinations. Those require more supplies and cost more. Even a cake flavor, such as carrot cake, will cost more because of the supplies. Simple vanilla will be your least expensive cake option.”
Wedding Cake Pricing – Cake Size/Quantity vs Guest Count
When creating your budget and narrowing down your favorite wedding cake design ideas, you’ll also want to consider your guest count. Not only does this impact what size you’ll need, but it also affects the design.
To determine the overall budget, start by factoring in price per serving size. As Jaime says, “We have couples who are looking for a cake to feed, say 100 people. We would price the cake based on servings. If they have any artistic add-ons, their per-serving price would go up from there. Our tiered cakes start at $9 a slice. So their cake price might be then $12 or $15 a slice based on the artistic detail they choose to go with.”
However, some couples prefer a certain size based on the overall look of the cake, regardless of the guest count. “In some instances, we will fill in with a fake tier, in case they don’t want to have too much cake. Initially, this cake would be priced by the servings for what portion of the cake is actually cake. From there, we would add in the cost for the dummy tier. And from there, a design fee would be added for the quality and artistic level for the overall cake design.”
As Jaime elaborates, “The larger a cake is, the more surface area there is for artistic design. So the cost will be higher, because more art is needed to fill the space of the larger cake.”
Why do wedding cakes tend to cost more than your standard bakery cake?
It’s true — wedding cakes are typically more expensive compared to everyday designs and ideas that you would find at a local bakeshop. And for good reason. As Jaime tells us, “There is a lot of coordination and extra time involved in the design process. So part of a per slice price does include time and coordination. We have some couples that we spend hours and hours speaking to, whether in person, or by phone and email. There’s a lot of going back and forth about color, flavor, flowers, etc.”
Most wedding cake ideas are much more labor-intensive and time-consuming as well. “Artistically speaking, some cakes can take up to 80+ hours,” says Jaime. “So the more simple design, the less expensive the cake will be.”
How far in advance of your wedding day should you book your cake baker?
Ready to start designing? Whether you love super ornate designs or more minimalist wedding cake ideas, it’s best to book your cake baker sooner rather than later. However, the season can also affect how far in advance you need to start booking. Here’s what Jaime had to say:
“I recommend booking ASAP. For us, fall is the busiest time of year. Labor Day and Columbus Day tend to be the busiest. We actually don’t take any weddings Columbus Day weekend, as it’s too busy in New England and hard to manage,” she says. “June, July, and August are also always very consistently busy with weddings.”
Remember: traditional “wedding season” dates are likely going to book up the fastest. If you don’t plan on getting married in the off-season, secure your baker once you’ve secured that date!
Essential Questions You Should Ask Your Wedding Cake Baker Before You Book
Before you book your cake baker, you’ll want to make sure they’re right for you. These are the three essential questions and topics that Jaime recommends covering with your cake baker before booking:
- Mention any allergies that you or your guests have. Not all bakeries cater to gluten or nut allergies.
- Ask them about their delivery and setup processes. Not all bakeries deliver and set up cakes, and some bakeries also don’t add flowers.
- Talk budget with your baker. Make sure you know what you’re paying beforehand because cakes can get pricey depending on what you want.
How to Determine How Much Wedding Cake You Need, Based On Your Guest Count
We recommend ordering enough cake for around 80% of your guest count. While some guests will want two slices, others won’t want any at all, so this is a pretty safe bet. If you’re including other dessert options and ideas for your spread, you can make this percentage even smaller — but remember, the cake is always the main event!
When it comes to the overall size of the cake, it’s best to talk to your baker. They’ll have the best ideas for how large your cake needs to be based on your number of guests and the unique design of the cake. After all, different size tiers will result in different portions, so the overall size of your cake will depend on your preferred design ideas.
