Ethereal Elegance + Edge for Two DJs’ Fall Fairytale Wedding

Planning

One of the things that first drew DJs Sonya + Jesse together (also known as LEVEL UP + Subtronics) was how much they both love the Fall.

When wedding planning began for this creative + musical couple, they knew for sure that they wanted to say “I do” surrounded by a beautiful forest in the Fall. Winterthur Museum and Gardens in Wilmington, Delaware—with its lush woods and historic architecture—proved to be the perfect spot for what would become Sonya + Jesse’s modern Fall fairytale wedding.

Planners from That’s Darling Events teamed up with Sonya + Jesse to create an event that was elegant and ethereal but with a little edge. Whimsical, moody Dark Academia details came together with the autumnal color palette for a ceremony at dusk and a romantic tented reception. Candles glowed. String lights twinkled. And Sonya’s sparkly fairytale princess wedding gown took everyone’s breath away.

We’re so glad Kate Ann Photography was there every step of the way snapping these amazing photos.

Okay, Let’s take a look!

Once upon a time…

The First Look

“Their first look, atop a grand garden staircase outside of Winterthur was an absolutely heartfelt magical moment,” remembers photographer Kate. “Watching Sonya descend the steps in her gown, you could feel Jesse’s awe and gratitude for finally being able to slow down and make it to this day.”

“Finding my dress was an unforgettable experience that I’ll always cherish,” says bride Sonya of her journey to this dreamy, full-skirt, classically bridal look. “Ever since I was a teenager, I’ve curated Pinterest boards envisioning my future wedding dress. Dreaming of a grand, romantic princess-style gown, I knew that for our enchanting forest venue, nothing less would suffice.”

“Accompanied by my mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law, I ventured to Kleinfeld in New York—a dream come true, especially for someone who grew up watching “Say Yes to the Dress” every night. After trying on five or six dresses without that elusive feeling, we decided to try just one more. The moment I slipped into it, I knew I never wanted to take it off. I was captivated by the subtle glistening corset and the long, dramatic train. People had always told me, “You’ll know when you’ve found the one,” and in that moment, I truly understood what they meant.”

Love that Sonya + Jesse saw the opportunity for this Rapunzel-esque wedding veil moment and went for it! Truly a wedding photo fit for a fairytale princess.

Our Favorite Memory From The Wedding

Our wedding day overflowed with countless incredible moments, making it nearly impossible to single out just one as the most memorable. However, one particular instance stands out as truly magical. It was when we escaped to a secluded, almost mystical nook in the forest immediately after the ceremony, just before joining our loved ones for the cocktail hour. In that serene setting, it felt like time itself had paused. Being together in that moment was a precious gift, reminding us of the profound significance of our union and our love for each other. Taking that brief interlude to bask in each other's presence as newlyweds before rejoining the celebration with our friends and family was truly unforgettable.

Our Musical Choices

Processional: "Ice Dance (from Edward Scissorhands)" by Danny Elfman

Recessional: "I Love You Baby" by Frank Sinatra

First Dance: "Love of My Life" by Harry Styles

Golden Bell Music provided the tunes for this newly married musical duo and their guests.

How stunning is Sonya’s Old Hollywood glam ivory silk reception dress?!

JMW Entertainment‘s elaborate string light setup filled the reception tent with otherworldly sparkle.

Sonya’s bridal accessory game was truly next-level. These elbow-length bridal gloves added even more timeless elegance to her second look.

Our Advice To Those Planning Now

From Sonya: "One of the most valuable insights I gained from the wedding planning experience is to cherish every moment, despite the occasional overwhelming nature of it all. Looking back, I find myself fondly reminiscing about the planning phase. It's essential to stay true to both your individual styles and the shared vision you have as a couple. This day is yours alone, and it's crucial to prioritize what will bring you the most joy. While we received numerous suggestions from family and friends, remaining steadfast in our desires allowed us to create our perfect day. Additionally, staying organized with checklists and assembling a reliable team of helpers contributed significantly to the smoothness of the process."

Congratulations, Sonya + Jesse! Your dreamy Delaware wedding was a total Fall forest fairytale. Wishing you both a beautiful happily ever after! ✨
