Did you know that every royal bride includes a sprig of Queen Victoria’s 170-year-old myrtle in her bouquet?

Queen Victoria believed in the language of flowers, the ancient practice of conveying meaning through blooms. This tradition quickly took hold and royal brides ever since have followed suit.

When Prince William and Kate Middleton tied the knot in 2011, the bride carried a bouquet that included lily of the valley, myrtle and sweet William, a not-so-subtle nod to her husband-to-be.

So, what’s the plan for Meghan Markle? According to her florist, the bouquet will feature white garden roses, peonies and foxglove – which, according to flower lore, has a double meaning: on one hand, this poisonous plant represents trickery and insincerity. But it can also represent healing of the heart.
